today for most of the area here as winds gust up to about 50 here behind the system. we'll start with the radar. you can see we've still got a little line of rain showers moving quickly through the district and points to the north. pushing new northern bridge county and that is the last of the shower activity but it is very mustery out there. you get the sense the wind are going to start picking up and they are as mentioned. we are expecting winds to gust to about 50 around here. once way get this last the piece of rain around here, we should clear out. temperatures right now in the 50s and even near 60 here in town. the temperatures will be falling a little later as the winds pick up actually whole different air mass moving in after a couple of days of spring-like temperatures. we'll start to feel cooler today. we have a couple of snowflakes in the forecast for later tonight and early tomorrow morning. we'll talk about that as well. real quick, you can see that the rain showers are moving to

the east and again, we are watching things wind down. a little over an inch of rain at reagan national. lots more details in a minute. back to you guys at the desk. the same storm system moving through our area produced this tornado in north georgia. officials say it was on the ground for two miles. at least one body has been found in the storm damage. a hostage situation where a little boy is being held by a man in alabama continues today. s.w.a.t. team have taken up positions around the gunman's property and negotiations are yoko ono going with the suspect. police plan to update the public on the situation later on this morning. back locally, problems on the green line have been resolved. issues began during the evening rush hour yesterday with trains

we will see the winds pick up again. today, they will be out of the west. so another wind advisory us for today. >> we are getten beaten by every direction. >> definitely an active pattern the last uple of days. we'll start with a look at our current temperatures. still very mild out there. i was expecting it to be a little cooler. we are still enjoying the warm temperatures. run out your door right now. these will not last. it will be noticeably cooler as we get into the morning hours. looking at the satellite-radar, we are watching things gradually wind down here and let's start with the wind advisory. this is in effect until 6:00 tonight. winds can gust up to 45 to 50 miles per hour. that includes the district here. definitely, if you have avenue got any loose objects, trash cans, that kind of thing, make sure scherr secure because winds are going to pick up again this afternoon. there is our front. you can see the heaviest of the

going on. this is georgia avenue. this is like held over from monday afternoon. this is the water main break. two right lanes are closed. only the left lane is able to get through. if it is trash day in the neighborhood, it will be all over the neighborhood so be careful. hunker that down if you can. northbound 95 coming northbound out of newington, be careful headed up towards the beltway. let's continue with our maps. we have some problems here. porter street shut down between connecticut avenue and beach drive because of a tree down. with the tree came the wires. and also some trouble along beach drive because of the flooding. the shut down between cedar lane and franklin street according to park police. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. plenty of wild weather across the u.s. clean-up has

only just begun in parts of the southeast. a tornado touched down in georgia. one person was killed and a number of buildings were destroyed and vehicles overturned. torrential rains and high wind also ripped through tennessee knocking down trees and power lines. one man was killed there when a tree crashed on top of a shed. in the midwest, after a brief warm-up, old man winter made his return. snow fell in iowa, nebraska, wisconsin and michigan. some places got up to several inches. a big change from earlier in the week when temperatures were in the 60s. kind of like we've been having here. developing in alabama where a 6-year-old boy is still being held hostage. >> it has been nearly two days since the man reportedly boarded the boy's school bus, shot and killed the driver and kidnapped the boy. the two are now locked up in a bunker. we have a report. >> reporter: a gunman, still inside an underground bunker at his home with a 6-year-old hostage but law enforcement officers say the little boy is believed to be safe. >> i can assure you that the

negotiators continue to communicate with the suspect. at this time, we have no reason to believe that the child has been harmed. >> reporter: the standoff began after the man shot and killed a school bus driver and kidnapped the child in midland city, alabama on tuesday afternoon. authorities are not releasing the suspect's name but neighbors identifying him as jimmy lee dikes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver. some of the neighbors say he once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe and patrolled his yard at night with a shotgun. he was scheduled to appear in court this morning to answer charges he shot at neighbors in a dispute over a speed bump. >> he was called the mean man. everybody knew -- i tried to get several of the neighbors, one who has since moved away, i tried to get them to take action with me but they didn't want to get involved. >> reporter: a neighbor also

says the man knew the school bus driver. the victim reportedly dropped off some food for the suspect on monday as a thank you for some repair work. it is not clear if dikes has made any demands from his bunker to authorities. in midland city, alabama, elizabeth prann, fox news. a community meeting is being held in loudoun county in the wake of a series of burglaries. it starts the 7:00 tonight at banneker elementary school in middleburg. there have been more than a dozen break-ins since october. cash, jewelry and electronics have been stolen. detectives will give an update and offer some prevention measures. police are trying to track down the suspect involve in a stabbing on a metrobus. this happened last night on h and 11th street northeast. police arrived to find a man stabbed twice in the chest. he is in serious condition at a

local hospital. still no word on what prompted that attack. the firefighter injured in yesterday's early morning crash on the beltway continues to recover in a baltimore hospital this morning. lute ryan emmons' right arm was severed but doctors were able it reattach it. three other firefighters were also injured but have since been released. still ahead, an innocent bystander gunned down i'm teen who perform at last week's inauguration is now part of the debate over gun violence. >> the first hearing on that particular issue plays out on capitol hill. a message from former representative gabrielle giffords coming up after the break.   -- a teen who performed at last week's inauguration is now part of the debate over gun violence. phoenix office building. police say 70-year-old arthur harmon shot 48-year-old steve singerrer the ceo of fusion contract centers. singer later died at the hospital. so far, no word on a motive. the gun control debate takes center stage on capitol hill with the first senate hearing on gun violence since last month's shooting massacre in newtown, connecticut. gabrielle giffords was a surprise witness. the nra's chief executive, wayne la pierre, also testified. giffords, who is still recovering two years after being shot in the head in another shooting attack called on congress to act now. >> speaking is difficult but i need to say something important. violence is a big problem. too many children are dying.

>> the head of the nra says adding more school security and mental health resources will help curb gun violence. a chicago teenager who performed at president obama's inaugural festivities here in washington was shot and killed near her school. it happened tuesday afternoon in park city. she was with a group of friend standing under an awning to get out of the rain. a gunman ran down the alley, opened fire randomly and took off in a car. >> i just miss her. i'm not worried about where she is going. my heart -- there is a whole section of my heart that is gone. >> they took the light of my life. this guy, whoever it was, the gunman or whatever, i mean, man, you took the light of my life. >> pendleton was a majorette

just a couple hours time last month. here are your temperatures. they are cooling off. 55 now in washington. we've fallen five degrees in the past hour. 55 in leonardtown. still, these temperatures rather mild for late january, particularly this time of day. 47 right now in martinsburg. 46 in hagerstown. i have officially our afternoon high temperature in the mid- 40s. so you can see we'll be falling from here as the wind kind of work in from the north and west. we should see cooler and cooler air working in. this will be the big story today. we do have a wind advisory in effect until 6:00 tonight. 38 in washington. two hands on the steering wheel. 43 in martinsburg. 23 in leonardtown. we could see winds gust up to about 50 later today. loose objects, definitely want to get a handle on those. new york and boston. then, in its wake, the lake effect snow machine kicking in

street shut down between connecticut avenue and beach drive. the flooding is causing problems along clopper road at first field. only the left lane is able to get by o woodfield road, shut down each way at churchill downs. this is all due to flooding. outer loop of the beltway at river road, traffic rolling freely. you will find your lanes are open if you are continuing on the northbound side of georgia avenue. southbound between aspen hill road and hewitt. that is where we have the water main break. stay to the left to get by. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. traffic. service on the green line is back to normal finally after a messy rush hour commute. the green line experienced power problems causing several delays and leaving people stranded. some passengers even walking through a tunnel to get out. karen gray houston has the story. >> reporter: d.c.'s fire trucks and ambulances converged on the

anacostia and navy yard stations in the middle of the evening rush hour. there was smoke in the tunnel. metro called firefighters. power was cut to two trains that. left a lot of riders stuck. >> and the next thing we know, the train conductor got over the airways stating that it was a fire on one of the tracks and metro is speedily working to get it together. >> tamara phelps was traveling with her two young children. >> we were on there. women started passing out. somebody had an asthma attack. >> reporter: passengers were sitting in hot, dark trains not getting much direction, they say. until one rider took matters into his own hands. >> i hit the emergency exit button and that opened up. that was the center door. that is the emergency exit. i proceeded to walk down the tunnel. >> a horde of upset metrorail riders followed him out. there is a track that is

dangerous, the third rail or something. >> the walkway on the left-hand side, they tell everybody to use that side. the hot rail is on the right- hand side. it was very safe. no issues at all walking down the tunnel. >> reporter: the metro spokesman says the problem was an arcing insulator that is part of the third rail. he says it started smoking. when emergency responders arrived, one of them took down power on both sides of the insulator instead of only one side. he says that took out power to two trains in the tunnel. metro says the worst thing passengers could have done was self-evacuate. the spokesman says they are hooking into that problem and will take steps to ensure something like that doesn't happen again. >> what a day. what a commute for them. coming up next, a story for all you dog lovers out there. what scientists are doing in an attempt to add years to their life. >> and a new study says drinking beer can offer some
